PISA & WTIA jointly organized the " War Driving 2004-05 Hong Kong" in Nov-2004 to Jan-2005. The results were benchmarked against the studies conducted by PISA and WTIA in 2002 and 2003 to plot the profile of Hong Kong WLAN security development. The survey indicated that the number of WLAN implementation continued to rise in the past year, and yet there was only a slight improvement in the adoption of security strategies. The number of discovered APs had notably increased by 95% to 1,723. The percentage of employing encryption technology for security has increased but still not satisfactory. The result of the survey also proved that it was feasible to war drive from distances in the order of kilometres. With a high gain antenna, 1460 APs were discovered in the Victoria Harbour Cruise. With the arrangement of an authorized access point in Admiralty, we were able to conduct a connection test to prove that a good connection could be made from a distance.
